Career day at HTHNC is to help inspire kids to view their futures with all the possibilities available to them by starting in their first year of high school. As a freshman we are not expected to know what we want in life because we are still figuring out being in high school, but we view our interests in the moment that we have a put them out into a career. Not only do we get exposure to the real adult world but we gain new skills that we might have not had before and might use skills that we've learned at school (professionalism) at this day of shadowing.
With my experience as it was my first time being a part of career day I went and shadowed Joni Eisenstein a defense attorney for her own firm located in Oceanside, CA. A couple of other students and I shadowed her while she was actually doing a case. We sat in the jury stand as she defended her client and stated evidence on why her client was not guilty of the crime (which was a temporary restraining order). After her case we went around the entire vista court house watching other cases, while she described the vocabulary they used, met people (attorneys, DA's, Judges, and etc.), and all the while she told us what exactly was different about each section of the courthouse. When I interviewed her about a few other questions I had here is what she said: 1. My days always vary. Combination of court appearances and lawyer work at office including client meetings. Not in court every day. About 3-4 Times a week. (this is what a typical day at the office/courthouse looks like) 2. Professional dress, professional demeanor, maintains client confidentiality, punctuality with respect to both assignments due and arrival at office on time. (these are just some of the view work policies that are conducted at her workplace) 3. Administrative—file creation and organization, greeting and doing intake on new and current clients, legal research, courthouse “errands”—filing motions, picking up reports from DA office, calendaring hearings. (when being involved in this job of law these are some of the tasks/activities that are done) 4. Undergraduate degree in addition to law school degree (3 years minimum), passing 3 day bar exam and passing moral character background check by State bar. (if I was ever to go into this field this is what the process/steps of being an attorney would look like) After this interview I felt that just a few of the skills I have already learned in school I can apply to the workplace of law, which are public speaking, debating, and an activity that we do every year (MUN). I use debating in trying to fight for my client, I use public speaking in front of the prosecution, jury, and witnesses in court, and I use my skills learned from the MUN activity by finding evidence/ writing papers/ writing speeches to state my claim for my client. Right before the day was over Ms. Eisenstein introduced us to Judge Goldstein who was incredibly nice and gave us really great advice on the future. He told us that he didn't become a lawyer in till his later years in his life and was involved in many other careers before he was ever a judge. He also told us that you want to view your options of interesting careers because nowadays a normal attorney has only been an attorney and has really no life experience. I really took that advice and don't want to focus on one point of interest in the future but many so I can have an eventful career(s). Furthermore, a great a exciting day was full of many new learning experiences for me, if i was to do it all again I would take more pictures of the building instead of keeping just a mind picture. I would also ask more questions throughout instead of just at the end or to maybe go into the career day with some small questions I have. Next year, I'm going to make sure that when contacting the people that I try to do it at least 3-2 weeks prior to the date because more than half of the people I contacted were busy based on their very busy schedules and I didn't get to do the career day I was hoping for which was oceanography but I learned a lot about this new career that I am defiantly interested in for future ideas.
